Cerro Toco - starting the ascent at the ALMA astronomical observation center
This mountain is located next to the Jama Pass between Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. It is easy to access from San Pedro de Atacama, where a 40km drive gaining aproximatively 2500m altitude. Once you reach the space center, you will have 600m extra to climb to the summit reaching 5600m. It is a technically very easy ascent (high altitude hiking). The view from up there is very rewarding and you can see in the distance the laguna blanca and laguna verde on the bolivian side, the lower plateau of the atacama desert on the chilean side, and following the paved road, you'll look towards Chile. This summit is ideal for further acclimatizing, and to rest lower in the afternoon in the cozy village of San Pedro.
